- Cat-2 Eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor AND admission to Ph.D. (But NOT for JRF).
- Cat-3 Eligible strictly for Admission to Ph.D. only (NOT for JRF or Assistant Professor).

Standard Master’s Degree Route
Candidates must possess an M.Sc. or equivalent degree, Integrated BS-MS, BS-4 years, BE, B.Tech, B.Pharma, or MBBS. The minimum percentage requirement is 55% marks (without rounding off) for General/General-EWS and OBC (Non-Creamy Layer). For SC/ST, Third gender, and PwD/PwBD candidates, the minimum requirement is 50% marks.
4-Year Bachelor’s Degree Route (New Rule)
Candidates having passed a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme must have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate (or equivalent grade). A 5% relaxation is applicable for SC/ST/OBC(NCL)/EWS/Differently-Abled.
Crucial Note: Candidates qualifying via a 4-year undergraduate degree are eligible for the award of JRF and Admission to Ph.D., but they are NOT eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor.
Result Awaited (RA) Candidates
Candidates who are pursuing their qualifying degree or those in their final year awaiting results can apply provisionally. However, they must complete their Master’s degree or equivalent examination with the required percentage within two years (for JRF) or one year (for Ph.D. only) from the date of the CSIR-UGC NET result declaration.
5. Age Limit & Relaxations
- For JRF: The candidate should not be more than 30 years as on the 1st day of the month in which the examination is concluded (i.e., July 2026).
- Age Relaxation (JRF): A relaxation of up to 5 years is granted to OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, Third gender, and women applicants. Research experience and armed forces service can also yield up to 5 years of relaxation under specific conditions.
- For Assistant Professor & Ph.D. Admission: There is no upper age limit to apply for Joint CSIR UGC-NET for these two categories.
6. JRF Fellowship Stipend & Validity
The stipend for a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) selected through CSIR-National Eligibility Test is highly rewarding to encourage world-class research.
- First Two Years: ₹ 37,000/- per month + Annual contingent grant of ₹ 20,000/-.
- SRF Upgradation: ₹ 42,000/- per month for the 3rd and subsequent years (subject to progress assessment).
- Validity: Marks obtained for Ph.D. admission under Category-2 and 3 are valid for one year from the date of result declaration.
7. Exam Pattern & Available Subjects
The examination is entirely Computer Based Test (CBT) and lasts for 180 minutes (3 hours). The question paper consists of three parts (Part A, B, and C) comprising objective-type multiple-choice questions. Negative marking is applicable for wrong answers (typically @ 25% or 33% depending on the subject and part).

8. Steps to Fill the Online Registration Form
- Step 1 (Registration): Go to https://csirnet.nta.nic.in/. Register using your own Email ID and Mobile Number. Note down the system-generated Application Number and create a strong Password.
- Step 2 (Application Form): Log in with the Application Number. Complete your personal details, select your paper/subject, four preferred exam cities, and educational qualifications.
- Step 3 (Document Upload): Upload a recent passport size photograph (10kb-200kb), signature (10kb-50kb), and category/PwD/Result Awaited certificates in PDF format (50kb-300kb).
- Step 4 (Fee Payment): Pay the required fee via Net Banking, Debit/Credit Card, or UPI. Retain proof of payment.
- Final Submission: After successful payment, download and print the Confirmation Page. Do not send any physical documents to the NTA office.
